Ward 36, St. James, Leeds

By Angela Hart

I'm writing aimlessly, endlessly
Thoughts come unbidden
As I lay on my dark, dreary, plastic-covered bed

The system has taken over
Society and its social functions rule
Seemingly to keep me warm and fed
Untroubled in mind and body

As this process unwinds
I am lost in the maze of my mind
Wondering at Pearl of all people
Calls herself a ward-sister
Unbidden tells me my life is meaningless, aimless
As is my writing

I write renewed with heavy heart
Weary pen on my pillow
Words I cannot see in the dark
Too distraught for sleep.
Freddy Mercury is dead

Please give me a sleeping tablet. Sister Pearl
I can't stand your contemptuous attitude
Yet I'm forced to listen to your bigoted remarks
"Homosexuals like Freddy Mercury have a retrograde mind"
